Abstract
In the report, background information on recycling, its status in the United States and abroad, and its technical feasibility are examined. Also, because recycling is expected to be an integral part of a solid waste management plan that includes combustion, potential effects on combustion of removing materials from the waste are considered. The report is designed to convey a sense of the current status of recycling and its technical feasibility, rather than to embody comprehensive authoritative reference material. Subjects addressed in the report include the current extent of recycling in the United States and in several other countries; feasibility of recycling; methods for separation of materials; information on uses and markets for recovered materials; and questions concerning the effects of recycling activities on combustion processes.
