Abstract
Analytical techniques and instrumentation were developed and evaluated for the collection and analysis of carcinogenic and mutagenic vapors occurring in ambient air. The areas of investigation included: the design and testing of a cartridge sampler for concentrating trace quantities (ng/cubic meters) of hazardous substances from air; the design, fabrication and evaluation of a thermal desorption inlet-manifold for recovering vapors trapped on an analyte and sample transfer into an analytical system; the evaluation of thermal desorption as a technique for recovering hazardous vapors from sorbents; the development and performance of a field sampling system for collecting trace quantities of vapors; and the application of techniques and instrumentation developed under this program to the analysis of hazardous vapors in ambient air.
