Abstract
An on-line system of signature verification is developed using a PDP-9 16K computer with a COMPUTEK tablet interfaced to it. Signature samples of a given user are treated as instances of a discrete time series rather than regarded as a sequence of individual letters to be recognized. Special vectors spaced at angles of 45 degrees are extracted as feature measurements for signature representation. This extraction technique takes into account the dynamic nature of signatures by sampling the data at a sufficiently high rate, thus insuring the time dependency of the signature representation. Several alternative verification processes suitable for on-line implementation are discussed. Their relative merits are then evaluated on the basis of the selected performance criteria: the percentage of correct acceptance of the authentic signatures and the percentage of the correct rejection of the false signatures.
