Abstract
During the past several years, U.S. EPA's Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio has supported research on the characterization, testing, treatment, and utilization of residues from combustion of municipal solid waste. These research projects include the evaluation of several solidification/stabilization (S/S) processes. Other research investigated the effects of MWC ash leachates on clay and geo-membrane liners. Leachates were used to evaluate the potential degradation to the liners as tested by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) methods 9100 and 9090. Results from these research projects and others will be summarized in this paper. In addition, the paper will discuss issues associated with utilization of the residues and the current research and demonstrations being conducted to resolve the issues.
