Abstract
Municipal incinerators, and similar stationary sources, though contributing only a few percent of the total national air pollution load, are important sources of pollution near population centers. The particulate matter they emit has a significant adverse effect on health, on materials of construction and on visibility; they are responsible for many complaints. Therefore, the Federal Government, through the Environmental Protection Agency, has promulgated standards that specify the permissible levels of particulate matter emitted from newly constructed incinerators operating at or above a charging rate of 50 tons per day. There is a need to define more thoroughly the chemical nature of particulate emissions from incinerators and to gain a better understanding of how the sample collection equipment used by the EPA influences the physical and chemical properties of the particulate. The report describes the development of a data base and the technology which will permit representative measurements of source particulate emissions to be obtained from waste incineration sources, and from the particulate pollution control devices associated with such sources.
