Abstract
The project investigated the conversion of municipal refuse into an activated carbon by subjecting the refuse to pyrolysis and activation processes. Refuse activated carbons were prepared by a number of activation processes and the resulting carbons were evaluated for adsorptive capacity. The adsorption of organics from sewage is considered to be the intended use of the refuse activated carbon, and, as a result, the COD adsorptive capacity is considered as the most important carbon evaluation parameter. Refuse carbons were also tested for methylene blue, iodine and phenol adsorptive capacity. The adsorptive capacity of the refuse carbons has been compared with three commercially available activated carbons.
