Abstract
A study was made in September, 1974, of the estuarine waters of Ward Cove and the adjacent marine waters of Tongass Narrows which are influenced by the wastewater discharges from the Ketchikan Pulp Mill Company, located a few miles north of Ketchikan, Alaska. The Ketchikan Pulp Company operates a magnesium base bisulfate process pulp mill at this cove. Production over the past few years has varied from 580-615 tons of dried dissolving grade pulp per day. The brief study reported here was undertaken to determine the present quality of the waste-receiving waters and to determine the improvements, if any, that have occurred in water quality as a result of the installation of a primary treatment system at the mill for removal of settleable solids. No attempt was made to assay the effect of installation and operation of the mill's secondary sewage treatment facility on water quality.
