Abstract
The purpose of the St. Louis metropolitan area public opinion survey was: (1) to determine the nature and extent of the air pollution problem as preceived by the residents of the area and to determine what effect, if any, this perception had on their behavior; (2) to determine the accuracy and extent of the public knowledge of air pollution and its effects and to discover the sources of this knowledge; and (3) to determine the readiness of the public to accept and support the various elements of a control program, such as interjurisdictional cooperation and the willingness to pay through taxes and increased prices. The methodology is described and the results are discussed.
