Abstract
The report includes discussions of: dose categories and recommended dose limits; the radiation protection philosophy of the International Commission on Radiological Protection; physical and biological pathways by which radiation from disposals of LLW in the marine environment could also reach man; three types of existing pathway models that can be used to estimate dose to man; oceanographic and radiological components of existing assessment models; proposed models; and, problems related to assessing risk from ocean disposal of LLW. The report concludes that existing models, if improved as additional environmental and risk assessment data becomes available, should provide adequate information for regulatory determination of risk from any future ocean disposals of LLW. The existing models identified in the report should be able to indicate whether maximum individual exposure limits are likely to be exceeded.
