Abstract
The protection of human health and the environment in the Southeast presents unique challenges. Our Region -- consisting of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee -- contains features and challenges that distinguish us from the rest of the country. We have highly diverse habitats and species, an abundance of rivers, wetlands and coastlines, as well as the Appalachian Mountains. More specifically, the Southeast is home to one-third of the nations wetlands, one-third of the nations estuaries, more than one-third of the nations coastline, and river systems totalling nearly 460,000 miles of waterways. On behalf of all the employees of EPA Region 4, I am pleased to present our Accomplishments Report for 2003 2004. This report is organized around EPAs Five Strategic Goals Clean Air; Safe and Clean Water; Land Preservation and Restoration; Healthy Communities and Ecosystems; and Compliance and Environmental Stewardship. We hope that you will find this report informative and that it will inspire you to embrace your role as a steward of the Southeasts environment.
