Abstract |
This report reviews the potential environmental hazard from the commercial use of haloalkyl phosphates (HAP). Emphasis is placed mostly on the four tris(haloalkyl) phosphates which are used as fire retardants. Data on the two pesticide HAP's, naled and dichlorvos, are used for comparison purposes. The tris-HAP's (1) are produced in significant quantities, (2) have several potential sources of environmental contamination, (3) have an unknown fate in the environment, (4) may act as cholinesterase inhibitors, and (5) are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. |
