Abstract
In December 2009, EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) introduced the Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) and released a proposed Action Plan to solicit input and feedback from community stakeholders and the general public. The Action Plan lays out principles, goals, and objectives that EPA can follow to help communities meaningfully participate in government decisions on land cleanup, emergency preparedness and response, and the management of hazardous substances and waste. The CEI provides an opportunity for OSWER to refocus and renew its vision for community engagement, build on the best practices, and apply them consistently in our processes.
