Abstract
Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Office of Safe Waste Management's Source Reduction Program began the Southeast Jewelry Platers Project as a technical assistance program in February 1987. The project is designed to assess source reduction opportunities at firms that plate precious metals in the Southeast region of Massachusetts (Attleboro, North Attleborough, Tauton). This preliminary report describes some of the source reduction efforts made to-date by companies in the Project region. A small number of firms have initiated changes in their production practices that have resulted in significant savings in hazardous substance use, waste generation, and water or energy use. The report details some of those efforts.
