Abstract
The directive provides guidance on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Superfund State and Tribal deferral program, under which EPA may defer consideration of certain sites for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL), while interested States, Territories, Commonwealths, or Federally-recognized Indian Tribes compel and oversee response actions conducted and funded by potentially responsible parties (PRPs). Once the necessary response actions at a site are completed successfully, the site will be removed from the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Information System (CERCLIS), and EPA will have no further interest in considering the site for listing on the NPL.
