Abstract
This study, sponsored by the Quality Assurance Division of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory, evaluated the performance of process feed rate monitors used in the Portland Cement and Lime Industries. Particulate emission regulations applicable to both industries are specified as kilograms of particulate per megagram of feed to the process. Regulatory agencies have assumed that feed rate monitors are highly accurate due to process control considerations; this study evaluated the validity of this assumption. This study has found that six major types of feed monitors are currently used in the Portland Cement and Lime Industries. In the majority of cases, regulatory agencies could assume that the process feed rate monitors are sufficiently accurate. However, if some question should arise concerning the monitors, the evaluation procedures listed in this report may be used to verify accuracy.
