Abstract
After describing the fundamentals of coagulation of humic substances for alum and cationic polyelectrolytes, field studies of two conventional-type water treatment plants are discussed. THM formation through the plants is examined, and removals of total organic carbon (TOC) and THM are summarized. Plant operation, water quality, and plant design that affect THM formation control and precursor removal are reviewed. Direct filtration with cationic polymers as the sole coagulant is a feasible treatment process for waters of low to moderate TOC and total trihalomethane levels.
