Abstract
The document compiles information on existing pollution prevention methods and identifies research needs. It helps define areas for research to increase application of existing methods and create new approaches for source reduction and recovery/recycling of 17 chemical groups targeted in the 33/50 Program. The emphasis is on source reduction, but recovery/recycling methods are also considered. A functional approach is used to identify and organize research areas for each of the 17 targeted chemical groups. The sources and production characteristics and rates are briefly summarized. Then pollution prevention opportunities and supporting research needs are discussed for the major industrial and consumer applications of the targeted chemical groups. The opportunities and research needs are presented in both narrative and tabular formats.
