Abstract
The hazardous air pollutant provisions of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA) require assessment of public health risks remaining after application of technology-based emissions controls. These 'residual risk' assessments form the basis for health-based emissions controls, if warranted. The U.S. EPA has health research programs underway to support the specific needs of the CAAA and to address generic uncertainties in the risk assessment process. The outcome of the research will be an improved scientific foundation for risk assessment. The paper presents an overview of relevant health research programs with a focus on the Research to Improve Health Risk Assessments Program. The strategic directions and goals of the research program and example research projects are discussed.
