Abstract
Concentrations of phosphorus, nitrate, ammonia, oxygen, chlorophyll a, and rates of algal photosynthesis in 5 lakes in Fairmont, Minnesota, were measured during spring, summer, and autumn, 1972. The relative abundance of the planktonic algae in the lakes was assessed by measuring the concentrations of chlorophyll a, one of the green pigments in algae and other plants. The average concentration for all five lakes, 57 mg/cum, is about twice the average concentration in Lake Minnetonka, near Minneapolis, and also about twice the highest concentrations in Lake Erie, the most polluted of the Great Lakes.
