| Abstract |
The paper gives an overview of the regulatory requiremets related to ambient ozone and discusses the related research programs of the Organics Control Branch of EPA's Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory (AEERL). The programs are part of AEERL's comprehensive research program to identify and demonstrate prevention and control approaches for reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. VOCs react in the atmosphere to form ozone at ground level. Failure to attain the ambient ozone standard is one of the most pressing air pollution problems in the U.S. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 include stringent requirements to ensure attainment of the ozone standard in some areas as early as 1993, and attainment in all areas by 2010. |
