Abstract
Raw river water from the Schuylkill and Ohio Rivers was analyzed for purgeable organic halogenated and non-halogenated compounds. The Schuylkill River water contained chloroform ranging from zero to 13.5 micrograms/l (ppb). Eleven additional compounds occurred at <1 ppb values. The Ohio River water contained nine identifiable compounds with all the compounds present below 1 ppb with the exception of chloroform which ranged from zero to 3.0 ppb. No non-halogenated compounds were found in either river with the exception of toluene in one Schuylkill River sample. Among the more prominent compounds found in both rivers were: chloroform, carbontetrachloride, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
