Abstract
This report examines the refining of coal-derived (H-Coal, EDS and SRC-II) synthetic crudes both alone in grass-roots refineries and in combination with petroleum crudes in existing refineries. The conclusions reached are as follows: The H-Coal syncrude is the cheapest to refine and the SRC-II syncrude is the most expensive. While the costs per mBtu of refining syncrudes in grass-roots or existing refineries is fairly close, the use of existing refineries will greatly reduce new capitol investment and appears to be the most likely scenario.
