Abstract
The standard test methods used by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency for evaluating the effects of pesticides on avian reproduction are critiqued. The intent of the report is to review several concerns that have been raised about the adequacy of the test methods, discuss ways to improve the regulatory utility of the test, and present alternative methods that discuss aspects of avian reproduction that are not addressed by current test methods. The overview of current test methods includes the selection of measurement variables, experimental design, selection of test animals, testing environmental and husbandry methods, egg collection and incubation, observations of progeny, and data analysis and interpretation. Alternative test methods are discussed that determine a dose-response relationship of pesticide effects, employ a shorter exposure period for less persistent pesticides, or utilize parental incubation to determine pesticide-induced behavioral anomalies. Alternative measurement endpoints and data analysis methods also are present.
