Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is required by law (The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act) to determine the potential hazard posed by pesticides to nontarget vegetation. This is accomplished by examining phytotoxicity data collected and submitted by registrants according to procedures described in Subdivision J of the Pesticide Assessment Guidelines. Although these guidelines were published in 1982, their performance has never been evaluated by a working group representing different scientific expertise and economic interests. Therefore, the purpose of the workshop was to critically evaluate the tier test system described in Subdivision J, and make recommendations as to how the guidelines may be improved.
