Abstract
The research presented in this report is a compilation of methods for the detection and quantification of specific PPCPs (i.e., antibiotics: macrolides and fluoroquinolones, and synthetic musks) in biosolids. PPCPs are part of waste streams entering sewage treatment plants, and may concentrate in biosolids. Starting with previously developed analytical methods for these compounds in wastewater, various extraction and detection techniques were carried out to determine the most efficient methodologies. The objective was to improve the sensitivity and recovery for these compounds from Class A biosolids. For all analytes a pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique was adopted. Detection was achieved with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the synthetic musks. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode array detection (DAD) or electrospray-ion trap mass spectroscopy (ESI-ITMS) were chosen as detection techniques for the antibiotics.
