Abstract
A study of the Lake Michie Watershed, the source of water for the municipality of Durham, North Carolina, is reported. The study was concerned with evaluating the effects of land use on water quality, quantity, and timing of flow during the 43-year period since the establishment of the lake. The characteristic composition of the soils and the vegetative cover and their influence on the hydrology of the basin are discussed. Through the interpretation of aerial photographs, Agricultural Census Data and other historic documents, the nature of land use changes within the watershed have been traced. Current status of the watershed is detailed and recommendations presented for improving the quality of the water and the general hydrologic characteristics of the watershed. (Author)
