Abstract
In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Office of Research and Development (ORD) initiated the Biosystems Technology Development Program to anticipate and address research needs in managing our nation's hazardous waste. The Agency believes that bioremediation offers one attractive alternative to conventional methods of cleaning up hazardous waste and has developed a strategic plan for its acceptance and use by the technical and regulatory communities. The Agency's 5-year strategic plan is centered around site-directed bioremediation research to expedite the development and use of relevant technology. In May 1992, ORD hosted the fifth annual Symposium on Bioremediation of Hazardous Wastes: U.S. EPA's Biosystems Technology Development Program, in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first time this symposium had been held in a regional office, and it drew the largest audience in 5 years. At the conference, 28 papers and 9 poster exhibits were presented on recent program achievements and research projects aimed at bringing bioremediation into more widespread use. These Proceedings comprise an Executive Summary, an Introduction, and papers and poster presentations in five key research and program areas, which, taken as a whole, represent a comprehensive approach to bioremediation of hazardous waste sites. The five research and program areas are: Site Characterization; Bioremediation Field Initiative; Performance Evaluation; Process Research (including laboratory, pilot-scale, and field research); and Modeling.
