Abstract
A biological survey of Antietam Creek and some of its tributaries in the reach between Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and Antietam, Maryland, was conducted between July 19 and July 21, 1966. The biological activities were conducted concurrently with stream quality investigations. For purposes of the study, the community of bottom (benthic) organisms was selected as the indicator of the biological condition of the stream. The combination of limited locomotion and life cycles of one year or more, for most benthic species, provides a long-term picture of the water quality of a stream. Fish and algal populations were given some consideration, but only to the extent that obvious conclusions could be drawn based upon casual observations. (Author)
