Abstract
After having purchased new carpeting for our family business in May 1980, we were poisoned by the toxic chemicals outgassing from the carpet. Previous to this purchase, our entire family had an excellent health record and no known allergies. Because of this poisoning we have developed a hypersensitivity to most irritants. Our basic life patterns have had to change dramatically. Over the past seven years, we have discovered that we are not the only family suffering from the devastating effects of toxic carpet poisoning. It is our hope that government legislation will require that (1) quality control be mandated in the carpet industry; and (2) that warning labels appear on all pieces of carpeting stating the ingredients and their possible hazardous effects. This particular legislation would protect many consumers from the damaging effects of possible improperly manufactured goods.
