Abstract
This document summarizes current scientific information regarding carbon monoxide (CO) as a component of the ambient atmosphere and the effects of CO upon man and the environment. The observed effects, as presented herein, constitute the basis for the criteria upon which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will review the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for CO. In the CO criteria document the following questions have been addressed: At what level of CO in the ambient air do detectable adverse health effects occur. What are these adverse health effects. What are the major sources of CO. Are there synergistic effects from CO exposure in humans living at high altitudes. Are present monitoring methods adequate to determine human exposure to CO. What are the global effects of increased CO emission into the atmosphere. It is in response to these and related questions that this document has been prepared.
