Abstract
Historical trend data for oxidant concentrations in the Los Angeles region were used to check the isopleth method that has been proposed as a replacement for the Appendix J method for relating oxidant to non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) precursors. Using the median 6-9 AM NMHC/NOx ratio measured during the summer as input to the isopleth model, significant discrepancies were found between the isopleth predictions and actual oxidant trends. Using a range in the NMHC/NOx ratio, in particular a low value for the ratio, much better agreement was found between the predicted and actual trends. Potential explanations for the discrepancies are discussed.
