Abstract
When ozone is used in the treatment of drinking water, it reacts with both inorganic and organic compounds to form byproducts. If bromide is present, it may be oxidized to hypobromous acid which may then react with natural organic matter (NOM) to form brominated organic compounds. The formation of bromoform has been well documented and, more recently, other byproducts such as bromoacetic acids, bromopicrin, cyanogen bromide, bromoacetones, and bromate, have been identified. The purpose of this communication is to report the identification of bromohydrins, a new group of labile brominated organic byproducts from the ozonation of a natural water in the presence of enhanced levels of bromide.
