Abstract
Successful and reliable nitrification of secondary activated sludge plant effluent was demonstrated in this field study using laboratory scale submerged rock filters and pure oxygen. The filter also operated as a highly effective polishing device reducing BOD and suspended solids by as much as 80 to 90 percent to levels of less than 10 mg/l. Two methods of oxygen introduction were evaluated. One system involved preoxygenation with pure oxygen at one atm of pressure, and required recycle of treated effluent because of limited oxygen solubility. The other system, which employed direct bubbling of oxygen into the filter, was estimated to be less costly because of a lower oxygen equipment requirement. (Author Modified Abstract)
