Abstract
Benthic nematode population fluctuations and biological, chemical and physical factors of the nematode environment were studied over a nine months period at ten selected stations in a small farm pond situation. Nematode community structure was investigated over a three months period. Changes in temperature and pH of the bottom muds and in dissolved oxygen of the overlying water were not found to correlate with nematode concentration changes. A definite correlation in numbers of nematodes, numbers of bacteria, and numbers of fungi with the thickness of the detritus layer overlying the mud surface was observed. Selective deposit feeding nematodes was the predominant feeding type found at the ten stations during the three months period. (Modified author abstract)
