Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed this report to present an environmental compliance overview for the U.S. chemical industry sector (Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Codes in the 2800 series). Through an analysis of data related to economics, demographics, the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), compliance trends for the industry, and focus compliance efforts. Information provided in the baseline report may also provide catalyst for the development of similar profiles on a state or regional basis and for development of innovative national, state, or regional compliance initiatives. By presenting a national overview for this sector for the first half of the decade, the report provides information that begins to establish relative trends among the various four-digit SIC codes within the sector. Through a comparison of environmental performance, risk-based criteria, and other factors, the data in this report may be useful to select certain industrial sub-sectors for special assistance and outreach efforts, or for increased compliance monitoring or enforcement, or to improve compliance through development of custom compliance programs that meet the needs of specific sub-sectors.
