Abstract | This report summarizes those opportunities that maintain riparian community structure while providing supplementary sources of income for landowners. Information was gathered from the literature and through interviews with landowners, product buyers, agency personnel, and others. Three general categories of income opportunities available to private landowners--growing alternative crops, harvesting forest products, and charging land access fees--are summarized. Information about growing, harvesting, marketing, product uses, economic and ecological advantages and disadvantages, and further contacts and references for interested landowners are presented. The report is intended to be used by agricultural landowners, extension service personnel riparian resources managers, and others who are interested in farm management options that help preserve and sustain riparian areas in agricultural settings. The primary purposes of the report are to help foster interest and to encourage landowners to further explore alternative income opportunities for their particular riparian lands. |
