Abstract
The Sludge-to-Oil Reactor System (STORS) continuously converted over 400 gallons (20 percent solids) of sewage sludge to oil during 100 hours of operation. About 80 percent of the energy in the sludge was recovered as an oil and char. The energy recovered was sufficient to make the STORS energy self-sufficient assuming the char is burned to furnish the heat for the process. STORS, when fully developed, appears to be another option competitive with incineration for sludge disposal. One test performed by spiking the sludge with pesticides indicated that some of the pesticides were totally destroyed and others were partly destroyed during processing.
