Abstract
Ground-water remediation at hazardous waste sites quite often fails to meet state and federal established goals. In recent pump-and-treat study of 19 active systems, Haley et al (1989) found that most systems had been operated longer than their initial projection for clean-up. Estimates could not be made as to the time remaining for ground water restoration. Inadequate design and failure to evaluate ground-water remedial actions stems from the inability to understand complex processes involved in the transport and transformation of contaminants in the subsurface environment. Paramount to this understanding is an adequate hydrologic, physical, chemical and biological characterization of the subsurface.
