Abstract | Presentations at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sponsored workshop on Transport and Fate of Toxic Chemicals in the Environment, conducted in Norfolk, Virginia, December 17-20, 1978, are documented. The six sections, corresponding to the sections of the workshop, derive from the efforts of ninety-three scientists from government, academia, and industry, and represent state-of-the-art understanding in transport and fate research in water, air and soil/sediments compartments; effects of biota on toxic substances; exposure assessment and modeling; and regulatory aspects of transport and fate research. Within each section current methodologies are reviewed, research needs are presented, and priorities for future research are discussed. In the final section, federal legislation for regulation of toxic chemicals in the environment is summarized and research efforts which will aid in formulation and implementation of laws and regulations are suggested. |
