An airborne remote sensing study of thermal discharges into Lake Ontario, from powerplants on its southeast shore was conducted. Thermal infrared imagery of the lakeshore in the vicinity of the three existing plants was obtained with the thermal channel of an internally calibrated multispectral scanner mounted in a research aircraft. During each flight, water temperatures were measured at the three powerplants by ground crews. The airborne imagery and water temperature data were used to characterize the recorded thermal fields or plumes. Color illustrations reproduced in black and white.
