Abstract
A guide to State and local air pollution control agencies in the selection, installation, and operation of automatic monitoring equipment is presented. The discussion is limited to suspended particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide, photochemical oxidants, ozone, and sulfur dioxide. Essentially a state-of-the-art treatise on automated equipment, this guide covers: Selecting the number and location of sampling stations; shelter design; instrumentation specifications; calibration; installation of equipment; routine operation; maintenance; and data logging. The detail is of value to administrative and technical personnel. Installation and operating costs, and personnel requirements necessary to determine the extent of the monitoring program consistent with budgetary limitations and the need for air quality data are included. Sufficient detail is provided concerning equipment specifications and operating characteristics to serve as an operations handbook for technical personnel.
