Abstract
In recent years, the well-being of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem has been stressed by the activities of the region's growing population. In 1976, concern for this national resource prompted Congress to order the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct an intensive five-year study of the environmental quality and management of the Chesapeake Bay resources. This program was created to coordinate research on the main factors impacting the Bay's water quality; to analyze, store and distribute research data; to determine which government agencies have resource management responsibilities, and to stimulate coordination among them.
