| Abstract |
This study was a multi-year pilot project to develop recruitment and data collection protocols as part of a broad effort to understand the population, emissions and activities of nonroad equipment in various economic sectors. This study, which was supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), focused on commercial establishments within the construction sector. Statistical sampling was applied to randomize the recruitment and screening of participants and the selection of equipment pieces, with weighting applied toward size and usage history. Fieldwork involved the installation and operation of portable on-board instruments to measure exhaust emissions and equipment usage in EPAs Region 7 area (states of Iowa, Kansas and Missouri). Data was collected during normal operation at construction worksites in three different phases over a 17 month period between June 2007 and October 2008. |
