Abstract
The 12-acre Brodhead Creek site is a former coal gasification plant in the Borough of Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The site occupies the floodplain area at the confluence of Brodhead and McMichael Creeks. Surrounding land use is commercial and residential. In addition, from 1982 to 1983, the State and EPA conducted a program designed to remove coal tar from a backwater channel area, which involved excavating and dewatering 900 cubic yards of sediment and backfilling the area with clay and clean soil. The selected remedial action for the site includes an in-situ innovative enhanced recovery process which entails installing hot water injection and extraction wells in the free coal tar areas and disposing of the recovered coal tar at an offsite permitted incineration facility.
