Abstract
Presents a methodology for assessing and comparing the risks to human health and the environment of hazardous waste management alternatives, based on a critique of available technical and science policy literature. Methodology is oriented toward site-specific assessments of alternative treatment, storage and disposal facilities. It is designed to be modular, with 7 steps (1) hazard characterization, (2) environmental transport and fate analysis, (3) exposure prediction, (4) health and environmental effects analysis, (5) estimation of adverse impacts for exposed individuals and populations, (6) uncertainty analysis, and (7) comparison of results across hazardous waste management alternatives. Careful aggregation of uncertainties is described. Extensive bibliography.
