Abstract
An investigation was initiated to study the potential effects to the salinity characteristics in Tampa Bay that may have resulted from alterations to freshwater inflows. Project objectives were to: estimate total monthly freshwater inflow to Tampa Bay for the years 1985 through 1991 (existing conditions); estimate total monthly freshwater inflows to the bay for benchmark, or historical (1938-40) conditions, (1) using existing condition rainfall to remove effects caused by inter-annual variation in precipitation, and (2) using period rainfall; evaluate the relationship between total estimated monthly freshwater inflows and salinity in the open water Tampa Bay segments; evaluate the degree of alteration in salinity concentrations in the open water estuary that may have occurred because of anthropogenic changes to freshwater inflows, and; assess the potential effects on selected living resources that may result from the observed and estimated influence of freshwater inflows on salinity conditions in the bay.
