Abstract
During the summers of 1969 and 1970 bacteriological determinations of coliform, enterococcal, and standard plate counts were performed on two high mountain drainage systems; Hyalite, a watershed open for public use and Mystic, a watershed that had been closed from 1917 until its opening for limited human activity in the spring of 1970. Serological studies on Escherichia coli isolates from water and wild animal (bear and elk) fecal droppings indicated the strong influence that wild game animals had on determining bacterial densities in the closed watershed. The opening of the closed watershed for limited public use and an extensive logging operation in 1970 coincided with decreasing bacterial densities in this drainage.
