Abstract
It has been known for some time that fishes are able to take up organic mercury from their environment and concentrate it in their tissues to levels that are toxic to humans. The research is directed toward elucidating the mechanisms of organic mercury concentration in the tissues of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. Attention is focused on establishing the relative affinities of the various tissues of this species for methylmercury; that is, the capacity of the tissues to take up, concentrate and store MeHg, and the half-retention time of this compound in the tissues.
