Abstract
A new measurement approach is described for organomercury cations, employing liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Special considerations in constructing apparatus to optimize reductive electrochemical measurement are outlined. The added selectivity of the differential pulse mode of detection is demonstrated. A charge-neutralization reverse-phase separation of methyl-, ethyl-, and phenylmercury cations has been developed. The limit of detection for methylmercury is 2 ng/g or 40 pg (190 fmol/20 microliter sample). Methylmercury is determined by the technique in two research materials--tuna fish and shark meat.
