Abstract
Insulated copper wire is burned in tonnage lots by local scrap-metal yards and copper refineries to recover the copper. Depending on the method of burning, the emissions to the atmosphere may include black smoke, chloride fumes, and ash dusts among other pollutants. The paper describes a type of furnace that prevents carbonaceous smoke, and reports on the chloride emissions and how they can be reduced by a wet scrubber. (Modified author abstract)
